Statement of Judge Williams Regrading Texas Bar President McDougal’s Comments on BLM
The revelations regarding comments made by State Bar President Larry McDougal and Black Lives Matter are disturbing and show just how little he understands about the issue itself.
BLM is a social justice movement, not a political movement. It’s shameful that anyone would call a t-shirt with a message of social justice electioneering and it’s inexcusable for the President of the State Bar of Texas to so thoroughly misinterpret the law, then try to cover it over with a pathetic attempt at an apology.
The silence of Justice Boyd and the rest of the Texas Supreme Court on this issue is appalling. At a time when Texans need real leadership, he doesn’t even offer a statement of support for the majority of Texans who are speaking up and demanding real justice reform. The Court enjoys administrative control over the State Bar of Texas (Texas Government Code §81.011) and their inaction shows benign neglect.
